An FD90 fire doorset provides a minimum of 90 minutes' fire resistance, demonstrated by testing to BS 476-22 or BS EN 1634-1 and, on the European route, classified under BS EN 13501-2. FD90 sits above the everyday FD30 and FD60 ratings and is specified where a fire engineer or the building's compartmentation strategy demands extended containment — typically around high-hazard areas, significant compartment lines and certain industrial, storage and infrastructure applications.
At this level of performance the doorset approach matters even more: 90-minute performance depends on a precisely engineered combination of core, frame, intumescent protection, glazing and ironmongery, and small departures from the tested design can compromise the whole opening. Every FD90 doorset we supply will be manufactured as a complete unit under a third-party certification scheme, with all components selected from within the certified field of application.
FD90 specifications are usually project-specific, so we will support each enquiry with the doorset manufacturer's certification data — confirming achievable sizes, glazing limits, hardware options and any smoke-control variant — before anything is ordered. Each doorset will be delivered with its certificate references and installation instructions aligned to BS 8214, ready for Regulation 38 handover documentation.

Frequently asked questions
Where are FD90 fire doors used?
FD90 doorsets are specified where a compartmentation strategy or fire-engineered design requires 90 minutes of containment — typically high-hazard rooms, major compartment lines and industrial or infrastructure positions. They are far less common than FD30 and FD60, and the requirement should always come from the building's fire strategy or a fire engineer rather than being self-specified.
Can FD90 doorsets be glazed?
Sometimes, but glazing at 90 minutes is significantly more restricted than at FD30 or FD60. Any vision panel must use fire-rated glazing fitted in the factory strictly within the doorset's certified field of application — the certification data determines the maximum glazed area and the glazing system. We will confirm what is achievable against the certified design at enquiry.
Do you supply FD90 in steel as well as timber?
We intend to offer both routes: timber-based FD90 doorsets where the certified design supports it, and steel doorsets where the environment or specification makes steel the better choice. The right construction depends on the opening size, duty, security and hygiene requirements, so we will confirm options against manufacturer certification data for each project.
