Certified fire doorsets, FD30 to FD120

A fire doorset is a complete tested assembly — leaf, frame, seals, glazing and ironmongery, manufactured and certified together. That is all we will supply: complete doorsets with their evidence.

In short

Fire-rated doors are graded FD30, FD60, FD90 and FD120 by how long the doorset resists fire: 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes of integrity when tested to BS 476-22 or BS EN 1634-1. FD30 (broadly E30) is the everyday rating for flat entrances and escape routes; FD60 (E60) protects stairways and compartment lines; FD90 and FD120 are reserved for high-hazard compartmentation. The correct rating for any opening comes from the building's fire strategy and risk assessment, not from a general rule.

FD ratings describe integrity (E), not insulation (EI): an FD60 doorset is not the same as EI60. Leaf thicknesses are typical, not mandatory — the governing document is always the certified design. What is the difference between FD30, FD60, FD90 and FD120?

The number is the minutes of fire resistance the doorset gives — 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes of integrity when tested to BS 476-22 or BS EN 1634-1. FD30 (broadly E30) is the everyday rating for flat entrances and escape routes; FD60 (E60) protects stairways and compartment lines; FD90 and FD120 are for high-hazard compartmentation.

Is a higher fire door rating always better?

No. The correct rating for an opening comes from the building's fire strategy and risk assessment, not the largest number. Specifying a higher rating than the strategy requires adds cost and weight without adding compliance — and above FD60 the design and glazing become more restricted.

Are FD ratings the same as insulation (EI)?

No. FD ratings describe integrity (E) — resisting flame and hot gases — not insulation (EI), which limits heat passing to the protected side and is tested separately. An FD60 doorset is not the same as EI60.
